LNER FutureLabs NEEDS YOU!

One of this years' cohort (TravelAI) have created the MyWays app that allows users to track and monitor their transport activities.  

Having access to this kind of data would provide really rich insight into the travel behaviours of people who use our trains and of those who may choose to take a car or plane instead of the train. In the future, it could be used for:

• Future incentives for modal shift (e.g. rewarding someone who switches to the greener option of train over plane/car)
  
• Improved timetable planning that better coordinates interchanges
• Better understanding of travel patterns to support people making sustainable journeys to and from our stations
  
• Identifying strategic transport partners to help better serve customers' needs
  
• Instant feedback on a personal journey (for example, asking why a customer didn’t take the train)

The MyWays app is designed to save you the effort, time and save you the need to remember to keep a travel diary. Instead, the app runs in the background and samples data from your smartphones location (GPS) and orientation (accelerometer) sensors to piece together the routes and modes of transport used. This includes travel by train, tube, tram, bus, foot, bike, car and plane. And as data privacy advocates we at TravelAi have strict licensing terms about how the data is used - no reselling, only for use in solving transport problems, wellness, sustainability metrics and absolutely nothing to do with advertising!

In the meantime, we thought we'd find out a bit about yourself and what it would take for you to become a long-term volunteer of your transport data.

Together building the transport systems of the future
LNER wants to deliver the best railways experiences and services, to lead by example, innovating where others haven't and engineer reliable, viable and affordable railways for all. Realising the opportunity that good public transit options can give in unlocking more career, business and societal opportunities.

You are being invited to take part in a pilot that has emerged from LNER’s Future Labs programme. This innovation strategy follows internal testing by a select group of LNER employees and now being shared with adventurous and passionate transport users.

We’d also like to use this data to help with monitoring our carbon emissions. THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN. As part of our FutureLabs 4.0 accelerator programme, to test if this app is something that we’d like to take forward in the future, we want to gather data on how our people travel to and from work. This will help our environment team with their reporting and explore where we can make improvements – for example, where do we need better facilities to encourage sustainable travel (bike racks, charging points, changing rooms with showers) to make it easier for staff to access our sites.
